When these homeowners found the perfect lot, our challenge was to transform the existing single story ‘70s ranch house into a gorgeous contemporary transitional home. These outgoing homeowners were full of ideas, and we were determined to design a home the whole family would love. Adding a second story was the trickiest part of this dramatic remodel. Popping up the ceiling of the main gathering space opened up the interior and created the right balance on the exterior for a seamless second story, and the sharp black and white color scheme looks timeless and elegant.

But it gets even better once you walk through the foyer. The bright and open kitchen, dining and gathering space is the showstopper of this home. High ceilings and clerestory windows bathe the whole room in natural light, and there’s a sense of fluidity that makes this home a dream for entertaining. With a wall of sliding glass doors to the beautiful patio and pool, this house is designed for indoor and outdoor gatherings. The outdoor living area features a covered outdoor kitchen and dining space, along with an open-air patio perfect for lounging in the sun by the pool.

The master suite also underwent an impressive makeover. Although we didn’t add more square footage, we reconfigured the bathroom and windows to create a bigger closet and make the bedroom feel more like a spacious retreat. To give more privacy, we also relocated the children’s rooms and game room to the second story at the other end of the house. This also allowed us to add a guest bedroom downstairs, in case elderly parents come to visit, and an office so the owners can work from home. It was a joy to collaborate with these clients to bring their new home vision to life!
